According to both Inland and International Rules, all boats must carry some means of producing an efficient sound signal. If your boat is 12 meters (39'4") or longer, a power whistle, power horn or bell must be carried. Each bell must have a mouth at least 200 mm (7-7/8") in diameter. If less than 12 meters (39'4"), your sound signal should be capable of a four to six second blast audible for one half mile. The navigation rules require boat operators to sound fog signals and maneuvering signals whenever necessary.
